Oh Anna I am so pleased you went to a real consultant rather than use TikTok filters: I think it is such a useful thing to do. Like as a fellow (dark) autumn I now avoid black as it drains me. And I am also gravitating towards khakis and other colours too.
I LOVED reading this!! I haven't had my colors done professionally but I think online shopping really helped me work out which colors suit me, because when you can hold up items to your makeup-less face in natural light — which I could really only do at home — you finally start to see which ones make you glow and which ones make you look like you've spent a week barfing up a lung.
Between the embarrassing number of selfies on my phone with different color fabrics draped around my shoulders, plus photos from over the years where I clearly look better and worse in some colors vs others, I think I finally have a handle on it, and couldn't agree more with how it has helped: You nailed it with the 'edit within an edit' concept! I can take a look at a rack (or the online version) of tops and completely eliminate most from consideration. So efficient!
One thing that had me worried initially was: "Wait, as someone who really suits darker-but-slightly-muted, neutral-leaning-warm colors (and I think we're in a similar palette! Beautiful brown/navy/charcoal/deep olive = my happy place!), does that mean I can't do any kind of bright colors? But they're so fun!" This is where Tibi's/Amy Smilovic's color wheel idea really helped me: there are lots of ways to combine colors, including darker muted colors (mostly "ring 3" and some "ring 2" in Tibi parlance) with brights ("ring 4") — when I'm putting together a combo like that, I just focus on trying to keep something in my palette colors near my face. That gives me the freedom to go bright (or even pastel) in pants, skirts, shoes, bags!
This was such a helpful comment to read Bec! I'm so excited that Amy is bringing out the colour wheel in physical form. Definitely going to have to make a purchase when she releases it! x
Hi, Anna. I had my colors done the first time around, in about 1984. I'm a "Summer". Every one of the colors that "does not look fab" on you LOOKS FAB on me. I have one of the most functional and expressive wardrobes of anyone I know, and I only buy things now when the old ones wear out. That usually only happens with pants/trousers/jeans. I have sweaters over 30 years old that still look stunning because I bought quality in the first place. I encourage you to do the same now that you know the colors that look best on you, and those you should avoid. Good luck and good style, Autumn.
I’m also really intrigued by colour analysis and would love to see pictures of you (if you’re comfortable) in great and not-so-great colours for comparison!☺️
Hi Anna, I absolutely love this! Thanks so much for your kind words. The Autumn colour palette looked amazing on you and I can’t wait to see how you incorporate the colours into your wardrobe 😘 Jo x
I’m so tempted to do this, even tho I am pretty sure I am also a dark autumn! It reminds me of being a kid in the 80s and having a makeup artist figure out your seasons. Black has never looked good on me, gold jewelry looks great, and the colors you showed are all colors that tend to look good on me. But you’ve inspired me to find a consultant in NYC.
This is funny. The three colors you wouldn’t wear are the three I almost always wear. I’m also a black only on the bottom gal, too. I had this down many many moons ago—it might be time for a revisit. And yay, that bright yellow looks lovely. On you—not me!
I thoroughly enjoyed a color session with Carol Goble ( are you reading, Carol?) in about 1983 and have adhered for a lifetime! Iridescent Summer… pastels, ivories, all the purples, aqua. It’s been a wonderful life, having never returned a purchase due to a regret.
I had my colors done in the ‘80’s and I was a winter. I still have the little sample of fabric colors she gave me. Since Covid, I have allowed my true hair color, which is now white, to shine. I would love to get my colors done again as I feel this has changed my palette. How do I find someone locally? I live in Columbia, SC.
I'm not in the fashion world but loved reading this! Color is my favorite part of mixing paints. Watching them change when placed next to other colors is like magic. It makes me happy that folks are using this to find clothes that make them feel good. Really inspiring!
It might be fun to just gather up a bunch of different colored tops and see which ones make me look the most alive, then keep that color in mind when I'm looking at clothes to buy haha. Thanks for sharing!
I was just texting about this with friends - fascinating and that vibrant yellow gold looks so good on you. Q about the process - did Jo take photos of you in each color, too?
I read your mind! No she didn't, but I was filming the whole thing (obviously checked before!), which I would recommend doing even if you're not using it for content! I took lots of pictures at the end in all my best colours x
It’s not much use knowing what your most enhancing colours are when the fashion industry decides every season that most of them are anathema, and manufacturers produce garments in none but the few sanctioned ones. Yes, everything is always available in BLACK, but who wants to look as though they’re in perpetual mourning?
WOW, did this bring back the memories of “Color Me Beautiful”. Dear friends and I had such a laugh and aha moments during our gathering, IDing one another’s best color palettes. To this day we laugh and still buy from our color recommendations. Thanks for the memories.

Before my hair went totally grey/silver/white, I was an autumn. Black looked horrible on me and I tended to stick with the beloved colors of Vermont! Once my hair color changed as did my skin tone, black is terrific and a whole new array of vibrant and pastel colors look good on me. So don't get too wedded to your current pallet of colors, there may be more in your future; your distant future.

It was so much fun! I'm so glad I did it x

Thanks! I did a YouTube video featuring some of the footage and some of the not so great colours are in there if you're interested x

I would just take a google - 'your local area colour analysis' - that's how I found my lady! x

Ooh I am autumn warm as well! So nice to read your findings so I can apply to my daily style :)
We're a perfect match! x
