How to reconcile a more active lifestyle with wanting to dress a bit more “polished” or “formal”

Oh my god I feel like this is my life's misson! HA! There's a post I did recently which is semi-related, but I'll add this topic to my list because I feel like there is so much to say! https://theannaedit.substack.com/p/what-would-carolyn-bessette-kennedy. Some extra tips in the meantime though:

- Find comfy flat shoe options - for me suede loafers have been a GAME-CHANGER.

- Jewellery is such a good way to add 'polish' without it being faffy or getting in the way.

- Same goes with hair - I'd previous just pull it back into a bun all the time, but actually wearing it down adds a bit more of an elevated look for me, even if I'm wearing a super casual outfit.

There's so much more, but hang tight. Post coming for you! x

Cute sweatpants? Like the kind I could get away with wearing out to run errands and still feel pulled together in but could aIso fall asleep on the couch in. I like the Tibi ones but they’re so pricey! And I’d like mine to go all the way to my shoe: I’m taller and hate cold ankles.

I feel like Everlane have some good, comfy, elasticated waist trousers that feel like they'd be good for this!

- https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-easy-straight-leg-chino-black?collection=womens-pants-trousers (might be the best option as they look like they run a little longer).

I hope that helps! x

Rain boots! This category has irked me for years. Not trying to win any fashion icon awards with these, I mainly want them to be functional. But something that feels classic and somewhat polished would be great.

Thanks for your question Vanessa and apologies for the late reply. I'd suggest these - https://hunterboots.co.uk/collections/womens-short-boots/products/womens-commando-chelsea-boots-wfs1018rma-blk?variant=46652111323436. I have a similar pair that I bought over 10 years ago and I always crack them out whenever it rains! x

Hi Anna!

I know you struggled with your style when you had a small child that enjoyed sleeping in the stroller. I am in the same situation now with my second son 🙈. What shoes would you recommend that are stylish but comfy enough for daily 10k steps walks? 🙃

Hi Sasha! Ahhh I have BEEN THERE! I mean, at least you'll hit your step goal everyday! In all honesty, I lived in my Converse for the colder months and my suede loafers or flip-flops in the warmer months. One of those moments when practically just takes over! x

YES!! I totally get this! Will have to another 'CBK-inspired' post like this one - https://theannaedit.substack.com/p/what-would-carolyn-bessette-kennedy. But honestly jeans, jeans and more jeans! I wore mine to the park this weekend and they got ruined, but they can take it! x

Best tips and advice for looking after items that require a bit more care (e.g. suede, cashmere). I’m always tempted to buy but so worried I’ll ruin them (I have previous 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Great question Gemma - and apologies for the late response! I wash all my cashmere in my washing machine - delicate hand-wash setting and only ever cold, and I use a specialist cashmere wash - I'm not brand loyal with that, just whatever they have on Amazon or at the supermarket. Suede is a little trickier. A good invest in a suede brush that can brush off smaller stains and knicks, but in terms of cleaning I send it away to a specialist suede cleaner via the dry cleaners. I hope that helps! x

Hi there! Can you share any notes or thoughts on sample pant and boot combos, ie how certain boot heights go better with certain pants or pant lengths? This is something I’ve always struggled with!

Oh Alex, this is such a great idea for a post, so thank you for the inspiration on that one! Have added it to my to-write list as I haven't written about that before. Thank you! And hold tight! x

Yes pant style/length and boot combos. Especially with low(ish) heels. I live in NYC and walk 10-20k steps a day, but want to look chic

Hi Anna, love your content! Funny question but I wonder if you have any advice around keeping a streamlined wardrobe while also having a changing body. While I love the idea of “capsulising” my wardrobe, my weight tends to fluctuate so I struggle to keep the items at a manageable number. Any tips/lessons you could share on this?! Thanks

Hi Stephanie - oh good question! And apologies in the delay to getting back you! I definitely have this too - especially with jeans. I'd just suggest keeping a current rail, or drawer, or however you store your clothes with whatever is working for you *right now* - your own little mini capsule within a capsule! x

Hey, love these style questions. Where would I find a comfy, well priced (budget £100 ish) lightweight jumper. I like long sleeve, round neck, kind of a sweatshirt but in a woollen material, something good for layering. I’m in the UK. Thanks!

Thanks for your question Hannah and apologies for the delay in getting back to you! I feel like the Uniqlo cashmere jumper could fit the bill for you - https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E465734-000/00?colorDisplayCode=31&sizeDisplayCode=003. Some great colours in this year too! x

Hi Anna. I just love the fit and look of your toteme white linen blend pants. Any good dupes for those?

I always struggle with finding a coat that fits with my wardrobe for when it rains and I don’t want to lug about an umbrella (as sometimes it can make you look like mary poppins if the wind hits!). What are some of your favourite raincoats?

Great question Penny! I have one from GANNI that I love (but they no longer really do raincoats which is a shame!), but I feel like Rains do so many chic, but practical styles - https://www.uk.rains.com/collections/jacket x

Hi Anna. Would you please recommend a pair of black leather ankle boots. Short heel. Predominantly for work, to be worn with trousers and skirts but also jeans. With pointed or square front (ie not round) . Budget £200-400. Thank you so much!

Hi Lucia - apologies for the late reply! I'd suggest maybe something with a bit of a Western vibe - they work so well with skirts and dresses too. So perhaps something like this -https://www.stories.com/en_gbp/shoes/boots/ankleboots/product.point-toe-leather-ankle-boots-black.1224304001.html x

Hi Anna, any recommendations for suede loafers? I’ve been searching for tan or dark brown with a more square toe, also something that leans classic but still looks modern. It would be amazing to find a versatile pair that can be worn with many casual fall outfits. I’m in the US and am limited to brands that ship here. Thank you for holding this style clinic!

Thanks for youe question Theresa - this is the piece that I swear I am FOREVER on the search for! I've yet to find something that fits that exact brief, BUT I'm planning on doing a dupes post soon, so will try and dedicate some time to go on the hunt to find a pair for you! x
