Five Styles Of Jeans I Love & How To Buy Them Online
...from someone who wears denim 99.9% of the time
This post is in partnership with NET-A-PORTER*. I know, I know.
Sometimes, all you need is a solid pair of denim, right? The bulk of my trouser options are denim, which tracks because in a standard week, I’m wearing them for at least five days. As we transition out of jeans and t-shirt weather, I thought I’d give you some options for jeans and jumper weather, along with some sizing advice to save the back and forth that’s so often the case with denim…
MY TOP TIPS FOR BUYING:
Firstly, it’s helpful to know your measurements. I’d say when it comes to buying denim, it’s handy to know your waist measurement (the smallest part of your torso), your hip measurement (measure over your hip bone) and your inside leg measurement.
Assess the model’s height and what size they are wearing. NET-A-PORTER always includes this and I find it so handy when denim shopping. Take these Loulou Studio Samur Jeans*, they look LONG on the 5’11” model, so I know that for my 5’7” self, they are going to need some shortening, which is a far easier alternation to do than any waist adjustments. Aim to get the waist fit right and worry about length later.
Click on the ‘Size & Fit’ tab for your possible purchase and select ‘View Size Guide’. NET-A-PORTER measures every garment by hand, so you’ll find all the measurements you need there. It can be handy to compare these measurements to a piece that you already own and like the fit of.
AGOLDE 90’S PINCH WAIST JEANS
SIZE: For reference, I’m a solid U.K 12 on my bottom-half and usually wear a 29 inch waist in trousers. In this style I wear a 28 and find that AGOLDE in general comes up large, so I would recommend going one size down from your usual in this style.
Ok these are a classic for me, so I doubt you’re surprised to see these here. They are just my go-to; whether it’s for a childcare drop-off, or plans with friends at the weekend - I’m reaching for these. I have them in a light-blue wash and this washed-black one and over the years they’ve moulded to all my lumps and bumps in the best kind of way. If you’re looking for a solid straight-leg style, start here.
AGOLDE LOW SLUNG PUDDLE JEANS
SIZE: I wear these in a 27. For a slightly more high-waisted fit like I’m wearing here, I’d recommend going two sizes down in this style.
These jeans were my sleeper hit that I bought this time last year. I bought them thinking they’d be a great summer jean for me and then have worn them every week since. They are a real ‘in the wash/wear them immediately/wash again’ pair for me. I’m always waiting for them to be clean! But the Tide pen useage is worth it because just look at them. They completely nail that easy, relaxed, ‘I just threw this on’ look.
TOTEME HIGH-RISE STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS
SIZE: I wear these in a 29. I would say these run true to size and are a relatively stiff denim.
Trust Toteme, to do polished-looking denim, very, very well. Of course they do! These feel elevated - a classic. If those words feature in your personal style description, then these are the ones that I’d suggest adding to your shopping list. I love the wash of these - exactly in the middle - not too dark, nor light. It’s a wash that pairs just as well with blacks and greys and it does with creams and tans. They just take whatever you pair them with to the next level. Tall people rejoice as these run long! Although I think I’d get more wear out of them if they were shortened just a tad.
AGOLDE HARPER HIGH-RISE WIDE-LEG JEANS
SIZE: I wear these in a 28. There’s a bit of stretch in them, but like all AGOLDE I find they run large, so I’d go one size down from your usual.
Out of this edit, I have to say that these are real comfy. The comfiest of the bunch and all soft, with a little stretch and a zip-fly (although I’d say that they still retain that authentic denim look in spite of it). The flare on these is subtle and doesn’t feel too much and I’d say that they are the perfect pair to throw on with a knit and sandals as they’ve got that casual, everyday jeans vibe to them.
AGOLDE REN HIGH-RISE WIDE-LEG JEANS
SIZE: I’m wearing them in a 28 here, but I think I’d buy them in a 27 as I could feel them loosening around the crotch throughout the day. So I’d recommend going two sizes down from your usual.
If I’m going to add another pair of denim to my collection for the autumn, then it’s going to be these. If you’re anything like me and have all the basics covered jeans-wise, then this cropped black wide-leg style is going to be something that actually adds to your wardrobe. I love how they can show-off a statement shoe, but they’ll be great when the weather gets cooler too with a sock boot. My favourite outfit from the bunch.
Sometimes, it’s just handy to see these things in video form, isn’t it? This denim deep-dive wouldn’t be complete without a try-on, so you can see exactly how the styles fit in motion. As I said in the video, an honourable mention goes to:
Loulou Studios Samur Jeans* - These were a recent buy for me and they are currently on holiday with my seamstress to get the hems shortened a little. If you want to see them in action, then check out this post.
AGOLDE Dame High-Rise Wide Leg Jeans* - A great option if you feel like your denim collection lacks variety. A big ol’ turn-up makes a statement and is great for the winter months when your whole outfit is ‘coat, shoe and a bit of trouser’.
AGOLDE 90’s Pinch Waist Long High-Rise Jeans* - These do what they say on the tin - the classic AGOLDE style, but just… longer. On the 5’11” model they hit just on the top of the foot, so they run long on me. But they are the one pair I have on hand to wear with heeled boots.
If there’s one thing I can go long on, it’s denim. So, I hope you enjoyed that round-up and questions, do pop ‘em below and I’ll get back to you!

Love the black with ankle exposure! I just went through my denim collection with an exacting eye. And yet I'm already like "hmmmm, I don't have one like that!" You wear them all so well. XO.
I’m surprised not to see the Sezane wide leg jeans here! I love them on you. Any sizing advice for them/Sezane in general?
