The Easy Way To Make Sure You Always Have Something To Wear
Find your seven spring uniforms...
You want to know the secret to always having an outfit on hand that you feel just so utterly fab in?! Outfit planning. It’s a little boring and we feel like we don’t have the time, but how about if I told that each season you just need to dedicate like an hour to it. An hour and a half tops? Long enough to find your uniforms for the season ahead. Just seven-ish outfits that tick off the events that occur most in your life. It’s the genius idea that I first saw Liza propose, I’ve done it for the past few seasons and it’s been so, so helpful. Read all about it here…
With Liza’s framework in mind, here are the seven scenarios that crop up most often in my life:
Childcare drop-off
Errands
Working from home
Working from home (filming day)
Daytime work meetings
Evening work event
Weekend
Maybe you need more, maybe you need less? Either way try to cover occasions that pop up in your diary more than once a month. Then all that’s left to do is to try stuff on. I like to take my time here, so pick a time when you won’t be rushed - the amount of times I tried on basically every shoe that I owned!! But the framework just doesn’t work if you don’t LOVE the outfit you end up picking. It’s got to give you the feels! So, when you settle on an outfit for a category take a photo and save them all to a folder so they are easy to find.
CHILDCARE DROP-OFF
I really had to resist the urge to overdo this outfit. I wanted to add a belt, fiddle around with my necklace, try on different shoes!!! But in reality I need a uniform that I can roll into first thing that makes me feel somewhat put together and is chic enough to look good when my hair resembles some kind of nest. So it’s this. It’s the colour combo for me - a deep grey with the indigo and the gold of the earrings. It’s classic and practical and all I really ‘have’ to do is remember to put in an earring if I can be bothered. Easy easy.
ERRANDS
Errand outfit must-haves? Comfy shoes, a big bag and no clothing that’s sticking to my body in any kind of way. I wanted to feel breezy. So I ended up here and I really like it. Bonus points for the fact that that it works with my hair up in a bun. I also like that I can take this outfit in two directions. If I want it to feel looser I can wear it as above with the shirt untucked and even a jumper around the waist if I want to. Or I fancy feeling more pulled-together I’d tuck in the shirt and maybe swap the shoes for a black sandal.
WORKING FROM HOME
Say hello to what I’d like to deem the ‘perfect working from home outfit recipe™️’. Here are your ingredients:
Wide leg linen trousers - button-up or elasticated, pick your fighter. You’re looking for comfort here.
Cashmere t-shirt - or long sleeve if it’s chilly. You’re working from home! You still want to be cosy and a cashmere tee feels like a hug.
Of course, then go in with whatever your jewellery signature is and you’re ready for the day in a way where you still feel like you’re wearing your pyjamas but you feel good about your outfit too.
WORKING FROM HOME (& FILMING)
This is a new category for me. One of my previous seven scenarios had been ‘Evening Out With Friends’, which I haven’t actually done since, erm *checks calendar*… January 13th. My friends and I are very much in the small children phase of our lives where leaving the house past 7 pm is unpreferred, so instead I swapped it for this category which is a genre of outfit that I wear multiple times a week. The tick list here? A statement top. Check. In a pale colour (looks better on camera). Check. It certainly is a fancier WFH look for me, but otherwise, I’d film every video in a crew neck jumper.
DAYTIME WORK MEETINGS
Could this be my favourite outfit of the bunch? For a day in London, I need layers (it’s usually pretty cold when I leave the house), a bare arm as I can be VERY sweaty in social situations (FUN!), and a comfortable shoe. Actually, I think the shoe is the best part of the whole thing. It's unexpected—it jumps out at you. I need to find an excuse to wear this ASAP. A black base, a mix of textures and a bit of animal print is a winning combo.
EVENING WORK EVENT
Now, this one’s a little tricky as evening work events I go to can range from a casual jeans and trainers affair to some guests rocking up in black tie attire. It really depends on the brand, the event and the venue. So I’ve tried to hit something in the middle here. An outfit that I wouldn’t mind sitting on the train in but wouldn’t feel too out of place when I got there. I’d probably throw a blazer over my shoulders for the journey, but the base of this outfit is really simple and actually looks lush with just a black flat sandal if I needed an outfit for a sunny afternoon BBQ in the garden.
WEEKEND OUTFIT
I’m cheating a bit with this because I feel like I make an excuse to make a double denim look every time I do this, but it’s easy, right?! Like a thicker, more versatile version of a linen co-ord. Perfect for plans with the little one. Seeing as the whole thing is very casual if I am wearing a bag with it and have a few bits to bring along with me, then I go for something small and structured and, more importantly, something that I can wear over my shoulder or cross-body so I can still operate as a mode of transport for a small human.
So find your spring uniforms—five, ten, whatever number you think you need—document them on your phone (I recommend saving them to a separate folder so they don't get lost), and call them up the next time you’re feeling uninspired. I can pretty much guarantee that at least one of them will work and it would have taken you all of three seconds to pick an outfit. Look at you go!
Thank you for this post! Another good reminder to buy clothes for how I actually live instead of how I think I do.
Anna I'm obsessed with your picks!! Every outfit is both sharp and effortless! I can't pick a favourite!! Love love love what you have done with this and your personal style shines through every single outfit. Xxx
