My Autumn Shoe Wardrobe
From non-stinky ballet flats, to the heeled boots that I could do a light jog in quite happily - here are the six styles I'm wearing on my feet this autumn...
Whilst there are some areas of my wardrobe that I feel need a quick tweak here, a downsize there and a purchase or two thrown in for good measure, I’m pretty chuffed with how my current shoe collection stands. So today I’m sharing what I’m wearing on my feet this autumn, with some dupes added in for good measure. These six styles are all you need…
BALLET FLATS
I might have been a bit scarred by my experience first time round with pongy ol’ ballet flats that I was embarrassed to take off round my mate’s house, but we’re here again and surprisingly they’ve become my go-to shoe that I wear most days. WHO’D HAVE THOUGHT IT?! I feel like this time round I’ve learnt two things - one, stick to leather styles. Just like synthetic fabrics make me sweat more, they do the same for my feet and my feet are less likely to start physically melting in leather. And two - I really do like a soft square or almond toe. They are sooooo lengthening on the leg and level up every outfit. They are more of a slip-on mule-y type ballet flat, but the Flattered Malva Suede Flats* have become my absolute favourites. Be prepared for a LONG breaking in period and size up, but in terms of finishing off an outfit, they are *Chef’s kiss*. I also have a soft spot for the ARKET Suede Ballerinas*.
LOAFERS
I’ve attempted the chunky loafer thing many times and you know what? They just aren’t a bit of me. The proportions don’t work with the clothing that I own in my wardrobe and they are a piece of the puzzle that I can’t seem to make fit. Instead through trial and error I’ve worked out that a classic light loafer shape in a texture like suede is the puzzle piece that fits in seamlessly. If you’re a regular reader round here then you would have seen my many raves of the ARKET Suede Loafers*. The colour! The texture! They just work in my wardrobe. These with a pair of straight leg jeans and a black cashmere jumper?! OOFFFFF.
POINTED BOOTS
Be prepared for me to go on and on about these boots because the Toteme Mid Heel Leather Ankle Boots* are the chicest looking, most comfortable boots I own. It’s always a risk to wear these up to London for a day of meetings because I easily hit my 10k steps and spend my time traipsing on the tubes or standing on trains and you know what?! These were FINE. Beyond fine. They passed the test with flying colours and the slight heel and square toe make every single outfit you wear them with feel like a stylish masterpiece (I’m exaggerating but I just want to get the point across that they are WONDERFUL and the shoe of the season for me). For a more affordable dupe these from MANGO* look pretty much the same proportion-wise.
FLAT BOOTS
I wasn’t sure whether to put this category in as I passed my Dear Frances Tony Boots onto a friend as they no longer fit me post-pregnancy (now sadly discontinued) and I have yet to replace them. But as the chill sets in I’m missing a slip-on flat boot that I can throw on in the mornings when I’m running out the house. So I did a bit of digging and I’m LOVING the Dear Frances Cade Boots (maybe even in the brown?), or the more classic Chelsea style Skye Boot (I think I’d stick to the classic black in these). They always do a FAB Black Friday deal so I think I’ll wait until then. But if you’re looking for a good flat black leather boot that’s similar to the Skye style, then try the Vagabond Alex Boots which look very similar.
MISCELLANEOUS
I know what you’re thinking - WHERE ARE TRAINERS?! And look, I’ve had a revelation recently that I only need one pair of ‘fashion’ trainers in my life - my Converse*. I got my first pair when I was 15 and almost 20 years later I still have a pair in my life. They are timeless and there hasn’t been that many years that I haven’t had them in my collection somewhere. I’d recommend the 70’s High-Top style* and in terms of care I take out the laces and throw the shoe in the washing machine every year or so to keep them clean and replace the laces when needed. The only other random pair of shoes that I’d recommend owning are a pair of wellington boots. They are absolutely the least chic shoes I own but they are terribly practical and there are at least two or three weeks worth of days that you will very happy with past you for getting a pair if you live in the U.K. I have a pair of Hunters that I got about 15 years ago and still wear to this day. I’d recommend a short style* as they feel a little less WELLIE BOOT you know? But tuck them away somewhere for a rainy day and you are sorted.
