All The Best *FREE* Style Resources That I've Found
From the YouTube channel to start with, to my TikTok following list...
This is one of those posts that I actually began drafting a month ago, and first started as a small condensed list and snowballed into something a little larger than I first imagined. Of course the list of free style resources online is VAST, endless even, but here’s a taste of my fashion diet; where I like to turn for ideas and commentary when I’m in the mood to learn…
RETAILERS
It might not seem like an obvious choice, but Oluwaseun got me into the this - the idea of using style retailers for inspiration. So going on your favourite sites and seeing how they’ve styled pieces, pairings you like, colour combs that sing to you - basically window shopping, without actually purchasing and then shopping your own wardrobe.
Tibi ‘The Good Ick’ - Do I own any clothing from Tibi?! No I don’t and actually there isn’t anything that I’d add to my wishlist right now, but what they do really well is put A LOT of style content out there, that obviously feeds into the brand, but will also just arm you with a lot of advice for you to cherry pick from. They feature many times on this list because they create a lot of really valuable content in my eyes.
The Toteme ‘Wear’ Section - I thought they’d removed this section from their website but you just have to dig a little harder to find it now and I’m glad! Because I’m always checking it! They break down outfit formulas into three categories - everyday, evening and weekend - and then give nine ideas for each. It’s a good place to head whenever you’re feeling blank.
PORTER - Don’t sleep on NAP’s editorial work. Take this piece on ‘Toteme’s Weekend Capsule’, and just use it as ideas for your next comfy weekend ensemble. A good place if you’re bored of scrolling Pinterest.
YOUTUBE
If you’re going to start with one thing then make it the TIBI style classes - they are just fun to watch and long format so I usually have them on whilst I’m in the shower or getting ready. You can learn A LOT from these. I bought the HUGE Creative Pragmatist book from their website as a Christmas present to myself and whilst it’s lovely to leaf through, I’d say that most of it is covered in the classes.
If it’s the business of fashion that you have an interest in then I suggest binging every video on the Understitch YouTube channel.
Nathalie is a newer discovery for me - someone shouted her out on here and I can’t remember exactly who it was - Rachel was it you!? But she makes great styling videos on YT, think a Substack ‘everything I wore this week’ type post, but in YouTube form.
I really love listening to Drew’s commentary and found him via his ‘I Wore The Same Jeans for 100 Days Straight’ video - really informative.
INSTAGRAM & TIKTOK
Of course I’ve got to mention Allison Bornstein, I love her styling IG’s, but also her general musings on TikTok, I feel like they always light a fire in me in a good way. I’ve also watched every single one of her YouTube videos.
Amy Smilovic - the founder on TIBI (see above!). I really love her IG stories - she recently did some great ones showcasing how just a small amount of items she packed for a winter break, sorted her out for a whole host of activities (she did a Subtsack on it too).
There will never be a Sylvie Mus outfit carousel post that I don’t adore, in terms of other Instagram creators I love for outfit ideas I’m always saving posts from Monikh, Emma Rose, Louisa Hatt, Abi and Maya Moore.
And on TikTok I love: Heather for daily outfit ideas and NYC vibes, Madison combs Pinterest for the best ideas, Mandy for her fashion takes and 75 Hard Style Challenge (I REALLY want to do this!), I could listen to Jesica talk for *days* and Hannah is great for learning more about vintage.
MY SUBSTACK FAVES
Now not every single article from these publications is free necessarily, but most have a few free-to-read posts to browse and you can always dip in and out of each and see what takes your fancy. Check out my full following list on my profile, but here are some that I love specifically as style resources:
Sarah’s Retail Diary - for keeping abreast of trends and business news.
Rule of Five - for advice on how to buy less.
True Style - an absolute wealth of sustainable style musings.
Hey Mrs Solomon - gets the ol’ fashion cogs whirring in my brain.
In Moda Veritas, Troupe & Uniform - for style formulas in abundance.
Jane on Jeans - for all things denim.
Pigpen - I love how Heather writes about style.
This post could EASILY warrant a part two, but for now please do drop your favourite fashion resources below - let’s make it a big style soup. I need some scrolling ideas!
