12 Ideas For What To Wear On New Year's Eve
The 'staying in, but still slightly fancy' edition...
Earlier today I asked in the chat…
By the way love the chat, BIG FAN of the chat. More chats to come! And feel free to drop your own style dilemmas in there too - the community is a lovely bunch.
Long story short - we’re (mostly!) staying in, or sticking to more home-based plans with friends and family, which is exactly what I’m doing too. So when the little guy went to bed I thought I’d play dress up with three comfy pieces from my wardrobe and try to find the right balance of something that’s actually practical to wear for a cosy night in, but an outfit that feels a little special too. Here’s what I came up with…
THE KNITTED TROUSER
A knitted trouser is basically like wearing pyjamas. Plus points for the fact that you’ll be able to roll into bed when the festivities end. Of course nothing in this line up is particularly out there (if you want a bit of spice check out Leandra’s post on this exact topic - it’s fun!!!), and everything was hanging in my wardrobe already. Nothing new, except a pair of leopard print slingbacks that I found on Vinted for for £10 and arrived last week! So I kept it simple with a classic white shirt (dress it up with a drop earring and a red lip), a simple cashmere crew neck (add in a chunky necklace), something a silky for a luxe texture pairing and my gigantic Toteme jumper that is like wearing a hug.
THE CABLE KNIT
I played around with this because it probably has one more wear in it before it heads into the laundry basket so I thought it could be a contender for my own NYE plans, plus it’s SO COSY!! Feel free to sub for any massively oversized chunky knit that you already own. Trouser-wise I tried to continue with the comfortable theme and thought it could work nicely with my knitted trousers and my silky ones (again it’s really the jewellery and hair/makeup choices that could make it feel more ‘party’ if that’s what you’re after). Or I thought that actually it pairs nicely with a skirt - either a long silky number that I usually wear more in the summer so it was nice to dust it off, or a mini for a more festive feel.
THE COMFY DENIM
Picking denim is a controversial choice I know, especially for a post that is all about chilling at home, but these Aligne jeans* are one of the most home-appropriate pairs I own and I really think the wide-leg gives you something to play with. From left to right, we have a knitted vest which I jazzed up with my necklace for if it’s nice and toasty in your house (aka. not our house 😂), but I really loved the jeans with just a simple cream silk shirt thrown on (it’s the zebra print belt that makes it for me - this one is a serious contender). You can’t see the detail here, but the top in outfit three is mesh with a bralette-insert and feels like a good option if you’re heading to a houseparty, and I actually really loved the ‘belted blazer’ look if you want to feel slightly more formal.
I’m sure that didn’t blow your socks off, but maybe it gave you a new formula or two that you might want to wheel out for whatever you plans are for the 31st - let me know! I’m working on a ‘My Style Practices for 2024’ post that is currently sat halfway finished in my drafts, so hoping that will be with you in the next couple of days. See you then!
Love the jeans with the silk shirt look for sure but wouldn’t blame you for choosing an elasticated waist option!
Lots of great options - I especially love the mini skirt + chunky knit + boots 👌🏼
